Repair Golf 2 alternator

After my alternator stopped working last year, I was able to get it running again. Unfortunately this year it got to the point where I couldn’t get any further without spare parts.

Anyone who knows anything about cars knows that without a functioning alternator, the engine will soon stop. Because without an alternator, the engine and the on-board electronics quickly drain the battery and when it is empty, the engine stops.

How did the alternator fail?

We were visiting friends in Hanover on Sunday last week. Everything was great on the drive to Hanover, but on the way home I kept noticing the battery indicator light flickering. And then about 25 minutes before our destination it lit up permanently. Okay, don’t panic right now. I was aware that it was the voltage regulator again, because I had already cleaned it and it was also clear to me that we could still make it home with the battery. And I was right about that.

What was wrong with the alternator?

The next day I drove the Golf into the garage and disconnected the battery and checked it. 53% remaining charge, so everything is in order and the battery is connected for charging.

Next, the alternator was removed. Fortunately, this can be done quite quickly with the Golf 2, especially if you’ve had to do it before 😉

Then the alternator was taken apart on the workbench and lo and behold, the voltage regulator coals were finally used up.

So I looked online for a new voltage regulator and found it. There was one at Autodoc.de for €8.52 with shipping unfortunately just under €16 :/ but regardless it was still cheaper than a new alternator for over €100

Installing the voltage regulator

After just 2 days, the voltage regulator for the alternator arrived and could be installed.

Since it was identical to the old one, it was really quick and only took me 30 minutes to install.

The only difference between new and old is that the new one no longer says VW

Conclusion: It doesn’t always have to be expensive

A new alternator for the Golf costs me around €100-120. I have now paid €16 for the voltage regulator and shipping. If I had gone to a workshop I might have gotten one that cost €200 with installation, or a voltage regulator replaced that would cost me €80 even with installation. Anyone who has the opportunity to do such work themselves should also see whether the component can be repaired again.
